A good news update on Huck!!

Thank you to everyone for all your support and donations to Hucklebuck's medical expenses. Huck saw an internal medicine specialist and radiologist yesterday at VSH. They reviewed the progression of Huck's condition over the past couple of
months and did a thorough exam as well as additional scans of his lungs.

Good news! Luckily, they don't believe that it is necessary to remove any portions of Huck's left lung. This is wonderful news for the little boy, who has already been through a lot since he came to AC&A in June.

They do believe that the collapse of his left lung is permanent. It is likely that either a chronic disease in that lung as a kitten caused this, or that his lung failed to ever develop properly. They also are confident the original coughing that prompted us to take Huck in for care in July was due to pneumonia. However, they don't anticipate that the change in his thoracic cavity will cause any problems in the future. Currently, he is being treated for an upper respiratory infection, but we hope that it will resolve soon.

In the words of Huck's vet at VSH, as long as his right lung stays healthy, 'Huck should wreak havoc for many years to come'. :)

Thank you all for your donations, which have aided AC&A in the costs for Hucklebuck to see these specialists and all of his radiographs, medications, etc. over the past 2 months. We have lots of kitties that have needed medical care this year, and every little bit helps tremendously. We strive to provide the best medical care possible.

We appreciate you, and the kitties do too!!

Petsmart Friends and Family Savings Weekend

Save 15% this weekend (Friday through Sunday) by printing the coupon from the following website.  We all rescue, 15% adds up!

All in a day's volunteer work!

In keeping with the naming theme (old Hollywood) on the Persians abandoned by a back yard breeder, this little guy is Clark Gable.

This little one was rejected by the mama cat along with the other two siblings.  Unfortunately the other two kittens did not survive but so far Clark is doing well.  Because he's so small and can't eat much at one time, he has to be fed every hour.  Fortunately he is gaining weight and has lots of energy.

Blog friends

Please spread the word about Hucklebuck if you can.  I know we all do rescue and none of us have much money but sharing his story and chip-in information may help raise the much needed money for his medical.  Thank you!

Here's the link to his whole story and chip-in:

New babies

I should be sleeping right now.  But sleep is fleeting!  Zsa Zsa Gabor (the cat) has refused to care for her three babies and we only have one bottle feeder and he has his hands full with other kittens right now. So I have the babies because I'm able to work from home ("perk" of being a technical writer).  Although it's hard to work when you've had no sleep and you have to feed babies every 2 hours!  The three little ones are very small - too small.  Sometimes they take the bottle ok, but sometimes I syringe feed them.  They're only about 52 hours old.

Here's hoping today isn't as crazy work-wise as it was yesterday because I barely made my deadlines because of the feedings.

Purrs and paws crossed everyone please that these babies make it.  They weigh several ounces less than they should and even with regular feedings just aren't gaining weight on the schedule they should be.  This morning I decided to only syringe feed because that way I can make sure they get exactly what they need (1 cc each x 3 cycles each feeding - they need to each eat 3-4 cc's each feeding right now).

Please Help Hucklebuck!

Meet Hucklebuck. Huck was taken in by Alley Cats and Angels when he was found wandering alone and hungry in an Apex neighborhood. He was just about 12 weeks old. Alley Cats and Angels volunteers gave him medical care, food, a warm place to sleep, and lots of love.

Since that time, Hucklebuck has been fighting a serious lung disease. In July, it was discovered that Huck had a collapsed left lung and that both lungs were severely diseased. He was treated for a possible infection and/or parasite in his lungs. Afterwards, his right lung showed decent improvement, but his left lung was still in a rough state.

Last week, x-rays showed Huck's lung condition has further deteriorated. He doesn't have much healthy tissue left in either lung. At this point, our vets are stumped and have recommended that he see an internal medicine specialist. The costs for Huck's care are already adding up, and he will likely need a CT scan for further diagnosis. In addition, it is possible he may need a lobectomy to remove the collapsed portions of his left lung. The CT scan itself is very expensive, and if the doctors suggest that surgery will give him a reasonable shot at a healthy life, Alley Cats and Angels very much wants to give him that chance. However, this surgery would be extremely expensive, and we
ask for help from all of you so that we can help Huck.

Huck is now just about 6 months old. He is a bundle of energy and loves life. His decreased lung function hardly slows him down, and he is constantly showing off his amazing acrobatic skills. Huck executes expert jumps, flips, and twists while chasing after his feather wand. He loves to play fetch with rubberbands and catnip mice and never fails to bring them back. He is the most curious cat ever and is intensely perplexed by the shower running. Huck loves to play the 'stalking game' and immediately gets down low when his foster mom peeks around a corner, then suddenly appears right in her face.

Huck is a very smart boy. His foster mom was upset that he shredded a roll of paper towels, but then she realized he was just making himself a bed in the sink. He slept on the shredded paper, all comfy and cozy, for days. Huck is a very energetic cat, but he is also very loving and can't get enough petting or cuddling. He's a ragdoll and loves to be held like a baby. He'll fall asleep in your arms while you scratch the back of his neck. He likes to talk to his foster mom and tell her how much he loves his life (and perhaps that he wants food, too).

Donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated and will go directly to Huck's medical care. You can donate through the main page of our website at or through our chip-in for Huck.

Please help us give Hucklebuck a chance at a long, healthy, and happy life

Shop to benefit the kitties

Yes, we have a shop. It's not much, but it's ours. This isn't the shop where you will find our fantastic handmade catnip toys, but it's the shop where you will find some cute or funny T-shirts, shopping bags and magnets about and for the cats.
We'll be expanding the items over time, so check back once in a while and see what's new. Bookmark it, share it, buy for your friends!

If you've adopted from us, this Foster Program Graduate Hoodie is a great way to wear your adoptive parent pride this fall.

If you're a rescuer too, you will get a giggle out of this car magnet

Here's the perfect button to wear the next time you go visit someone who doesn't believe in spay/neuter.

Alley Cats and Angels gets a small portion of each sale which will go right back into supporting and caring for the abandoned and unwanted cats of the Triangle.

Have a stack for a cat -UPDATED

Due to lack of interest, this event has been cancelled
